Women Behind the Wheel: The Growing Presence of Female Truckers

As a career path, the trucking industry has had its fair share of growth; starting right when the first tires hit the road. As a predominantly male-dominated career path, trucking can be seen as a “man’s job.” However, when facing a constant gender bias, women have existed, and thrived, in the trucking world. While breaking through stereotypes and glass ceilings, women are steering in the driver’s seat and proving to us all that this isnā€™t just a job for men ā€” it’s a job for all. At C.R. England, we are at the forefront of continuing to move forward.

Looking Back: A C.R. England Legacy

With an expansive 100+ year history, there have been many women who had significant roles in building C.R. England. One in particular is Jan England, the daughter-in-law of Gene England and wife of Dan England, who continues to play a significant role in our company legacy.

Jan and Dan were married in 1971 and were quick to hit the road on their shiny red C.R. England truck. Local news stations were quickly interested, as they heard that Jan drove the truck just as frequently as her husband.

“It’s an overnight success story – they decided (to drive together) one night and left the next morning. Across the flat plains of Nebraska, Dan taught Janet to drive a semi” (Deseret News, 1972). The article, titled “Glamor on the Highway” touched on Jan’s determination to prove the stereotypes wrong; a young, blonde bombshell can drive a truck just as well as anyone else.

Moving Ahead

The presence of women in the trucking industry is still constantly growing. As we move forward, it is crucial that these wonderful women know how important they are in this career field.

“Women are the real architects of society.”
ā€“ Harriet Beecher Stowe

As more women break barriers and take the wheel in the trucking industry, itā€™s clear that the road ahead is full of promise. With their resilience, dedication, and unique perspectives, we are not only shaping the future of trucking but also driving the industry toward greater diversity and innovation. As this momentum continues, the presence of women in trucking will only strengthen; paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.

The future of trucking is in good handsā€”because it’s being powered and driven by women.
